My Creative Journaling class is going great - and beautiful work is being created. I enjoy teaching 'live' and plan on teaching this class for the Fall semester through SICL. If you live in Stockton or nearby you can take the class through SICL - Delta College continuing education.

These pages were created by my students - some beautiful layering going on.

I am teaching a creativity class through adult education at Delta College - SICL. My first class was yesterday. This is the first time teaching this class 'live' and not online. What I learnt was that I had too much information to impart for the two hour time slot! Better more information than not, but I will have to tweak the six-week class to fit a live platform.

Maria Popova wrote in a post:

I think a great deal about the difference between routine and ritual as a special case of our more general and generally trying quest for balance — ripped asunder by the contrary longings for control and whimsy, we routinize daily life in order to make its inherent chaos more manageable, then ritualize it in order to imbue its mundanity with magic, which by definition violates the predictable laws of the universe.

I like this definition. We teach about the importance of ritual in our creativity class. Rituals can help lead to habits that support your creative practice. Even creativity needs practice and ritual can set your intention and determination toward fulfilling your goal.

Art Markman wrote in a post:

To really develop a habit for creative practice, you need a regular ritual. For example, Stephen King (a prolific and creative writer) sits down each morning to write for a few hours. He compares the process of getting ready to write to the ritual of getting ready to go to sleep.

Rituals don't have to be elaborate. They can be as simple as my ritual of cleaning my working space before I begin a creative project.

Setting a daily ritual to practice creative ideas will help you make the time you need to be creative.

Moving our bodies is a great way to feed our creative spirit.

There is a wonderful article on Brainpickings that discuss wanderlust:

With the hindsight of a decade and a half, Solnit’s book emerges as triply timely today, as we struggle to master that ever more precarious balancing act of living with presence in the age of productivity. She writes:

Thinking is generally thought of as doing nothing in a production-oriented culture, and doing nothing is hard to do. It’s best done by disguising it as doing something, and the something closest to doing nothing is walking. Walking itself is the intentional act closest to the unwilled rhythms of the body, to breathing and the beating of the heart. It strikes a delicate balance between working and idling, being and doing. It is a bodily labor that produces nothing but thoughts, experiences, arrivals.

Mind Mapping is a great way to free up your imagination and see where it leads. Mind mapping is one of our assignments in Rituals Of Creativity™. You start with a central thought, problem, idea or project...then branch out from there. It's am amazing tool when you are stuck or just don't know how to take the next step. Roberta used this process to map out our Vibration Of Color™class.

Here is a terrific blog site that explains this process well:

This animated video by Matthew Winkler is a wonderful tutorial on the Hero's Journey. A journey we all take, no matter how small or large our goals. Many writers use these steps when creating their story line. I also feel that the stages of the Hero's Journey is also a creative process, with highs and lows along the way, and ending with transformation.

I want to share with you a blog post on color palettes of master artists.

Art Varsity is the website, and they have taken 35 famous paintings and listed the dominant colors used by the artists. This is a cool idea and a great way to find out what color combinations inspire you.

My favorite palettes were two paintings by Henri Matisse. What are yours?

Journal Page from Rituals Of Creativity™ Online Class

I find that to move forward in life we must look at our stuff! This means knowing our internal fears and writing them down. Acknowledging our fears and then moving past them. This is a lifetime pursuit - our fears never go away. But we can learn to view them with an acute eye. One of my fears is failure - as universal as you can get! When I get a negative review for one of my books, I feel like someone stabbed me in the heart! I feel like a failure. My whole being failed, not just the book!

What I do is then talk to myself - the reality of the situation is that not everyone will love 'me'. Or my writing or books. There are millions of people out there, all with an opinion. So do I stop writing for fear of failing this one person? No! If the review has constructive criticism, I will think about what the person wrote and see if this will help in improving my next book. If the review is just someone ranting without telling me why they ranted or because this was a book that didn't grab them, then I ignore it and move on. The painful feelings pass and my passion gets reignited and I'm ready to take on the world again.

I learned not to let my fears stop me from pursuing my passions. Yeah, sure, sometimes my passions have a HUGE learning curve, meaning I will have lots of mistakes and failures, but I've learned to enjoy the journey and embrace my mistakes.

So I challenge you to Just Look At Your Stuff!

Cheers,

Vicki

Painters need paint and brushes. When we teach workshops people always ask about brushes and which ones to use. For workshops I usually get a pack of cheap brushes that work well but sometimes they fall short. These brushes are by Artowl and you can get them on Amazon. They have brushes for all meduims. Several sizes and the whole set was around 36$ I have paid that much for one brush. If you are in need of a great set ...give them a try.  They work for all creative projects!

I took this photograph when visiting the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens. Desert beauty can be breathtaking. The glass art sculpture is a Chihuly whose art always inspires. I love my iPhone because I can snap a photo in just seconds. And sometimes I get lucky.

Patricia wrote: "I shared this yesterday, but I wanted to share again and explain why. In our lives, one of the things that we often are not always aware of are rituals. Some rituals are really just automatic actions....I get up in the morning, I brush my teeth. If I do it regularly in that way, it is a ritual. However, there is a whole energetic, and dare I say magical, thing that happens when we engage in a Conscious Ritual. For me, creative work...whether is is artistic expression or problem solving... is dramatically enhanced when I approach it through a ritual.
This workshop is relevant to all types of creative work. I took the on-line class and am so excited to attend the class in person. My plan is to anchor and expand the work I have already done.
Roberta Veatch and Vickie Vicki Gaia are both well established as artists. This is a remarkable opportunity to learn some tools... AND PLAY WITH some of the BEST!
Please consider the opportunity!

Some fun habits to unlock your creativity from Huffington Post.

We teach many of these habits in our classes, especially to still the inner critic and just have fun. There are plenty of ways to jump start your creative juices. First, though, we must not be afraid, and we need to walk through the fire to the other side, and face our fears. One way is to create habits that sustain our inner creativity. I love the suggestions in this article.

Read an interesting article by Clive Thompson in Wired magazine. In a nutshell, I'm going to paraphrase it here.

If you're "dying of boredom" don't head for your phone, tablet or one of the myriad of mobile devices to play a game of Solitaire or Angry Birds! Boredom fuels your creative mind. We need to lean into these downtimes so we can delve into deeper thoughts.

This might be the reason why I think of my best ideas in the shower. Nothing to do but soap and wash.

A restless mind craves stimulation. When you're not satisfied you tend to seek out ways to engage your mind. What worries psychologists is we are eliminating these 'slow times' by grabbing our mobile device. This shuts down deeper thinking.

I love this: Call boredom useful and productive monotony.

But be aware there is a difference between useful boredom and lethargic boredom. Lethargic boredom is when you can't be bothered. When you feel worn out like a faded dishrag.

So embrace "fructifying boredom" and shut off those pesky devices at least for while.

10 Reasons Why Creativity is Important

We teach a course on creativity because we believe it's important in living a full life. Here are our top 10 reasons:

1. Creativity comes from within and it is our impulse to express ourselves.

2. Creativity is that state of state of livingness that compels us to be self-expressive. Everyone is creative you are the creator of your life.

3. Creativity without fear and criticism will take you from the ordinary and predictable and shift your consciousness into new experiences. Creating something new!

4. Creativity is a form of meditation and when we are in our creative, authentic selves we are calmer and more aware or ourselves and others.

5. By re-connecting to your creativity, you will have a more joy filled life with celebration and gratitude of the smallest things.

6. Being creative actually gives you a better perspective on how you can discover what you are truly passionate about. Creativity helps you to discover your passion, express it and create what you most want from life.

7. To be creative is to face fear and turn it around so that we become more confident in our expression and can be the initiators of the things we wish to do and be.

8. When we make a commitment to expressing our creativity, there is a positive ripple effect throughout our lives.

9. Rituals are the discipline the creative person needs to self inspire and stay creative.

10. Creativity gives a person a sense of purpose and the courage to experiment, experience and express.

Wow! We can't believe it's already Week 4 of our Vibration Of Color course. All of our students have done such an incredible journal work. If you'd missed taking this course, we will be offering it again this summer.

What's coming up? In May, we are offering Rituals Of Creativity. Rituals of Creativity investigates the creative process through an invitation to create. There will be videos to view, assignments to complete and share, and Creative Mining, a supplemental document to support further investigation into the subject matter. All assignments will use a visual journal format. We believe that the creative process is not a linear one. Therefore the modules overlap and you might find yourself going back to one or more past modules as you work on the current one.

A new class is in the making! Journey With Words...where we'll explore the importance of writing and the power of words. This class will available in the fall of 2015.

We hope you will stay in touch and join our 3 Creative Alchemists Facebook Group.

We always love to hear from you!

Vicki and Roberta

Roberta is visiting and we're putting the finishing touches on Vibration of Color™ which starts in February, and Rituals of Creativity™in March.

I took this picture in Japan at one of their wonderful shrines. The colors were so beautiful and added to the serene nature of the landscape.
