EVENT DETAILS

This class is for anyone who wants to learn how to apply and paint on Venitian Plaster on canvas. You will learn proper application and the many techniques to create texture and apply layers of color. Giving your paintings depth and the look of Encaustic without the mess. These techniques can also be used on paper and the instructor will demonstrate both. Beginners, as well as seasoned artists will enjoy painting on Venetian Plaster. Every student will bring a finished 11” x 14” painting home and come away with new ideas, and how to enhance your current painting or begin a new and fun way to paint!

Artist Roberta Veatch studied fine arts at Arizona State University. She has been painting and working with oils and acrylics for over 25 years. Her love for color and design prompted a certification in Color Therapy and most recently Expressive Arts. In addition to being an accomplished artist she has owned and operated an art gallery in Arizona with her partner Vicki, where they supported artists and taught a variety of workshops. She served as a docent for the ASU Fine Arts Museum and has a degree in Spiritual Counseling from The Ageless Wisdom University in Scottsdale, AZ. She has taught art to children and adults in the pursuit of helping others find their creative spirit!

MATERIALS

Instructor will provide: Paper, brushes, Venetian plaster and paint.

Students will bring: Wear comfortable clothes, bring 9 x 12 canvas, a smock or apron to protect clothing.

Experimenting Is Fun

Right now I have three paintings in different stages of development. All are experiments where I'm trying out new techniques and stretching my abilities. I've given myself permission to fail. Fail in the sense I'm not worried about the final product. Having fun is my prime objective. Being open and free of expectations allows the creative side of me to have fun as well.

The painting you see here is not close to being done. I've added real maple leaves to the canvas, and I will see how they hold up. I need more layers and added interest, such as lines, shapes and possibly words. This is a cross composition, but the cross shape is too equal in size. I will obscure some of the area and create different size shapes and add color.

Taking a picture of your work in progress is a great way to see what needs to be added or taken away. Also, hanging your work where you can see it every day is another way to get to know your painting. It's a great way to get a fresh perspective on your work of art.

I've been trying to get into the art studio for the longest time. Really there is no excuse, but after saying that, I've been writing more than painting, trying to finish up a first draft. Roberta and I spent five days in Santa Fe at the Artisan's Expo. We had fun taking a workshops. Sandra Duran Wilson's workshop focused on the importance of layering your work. This is Bert and me in Jamaica taking a painting class taught by Alan Soffer. Alan is an amazing painter working in Encaustics (wax medium). My art degree is in Applied Design with an emphasis in metal and fiber. After college, I gravitated to collage and mixed media. I never officially took a painting class. So, with a bit of anxiety, I agreed to take one with Roberta.

Now, she didn't have to twist my arm. Jamaica was awesome.

And, I love taking a risk and seeing what comes from stepping outside of my comfort zone.  Once I became the 'fool' and said yes, I relaxed and went with an open mind. And, to just have fun!

We had a great time and I learned some new techniques and to be free with the paint brush.
