My Creative Journaling class is going great - and beautiful work is being created. I enjoy teaching 'live' and plan on teaching this class for the Fall semester through SICL. If you live in Stockton or nearby you can take the class through SICL - Delta College continuing education.

These pages were created by my students - some beautiful layering going on.

I am teaching a creativity class through adult education at Delta College - SICL. My first class was yesterday. This is the first time teaching this class 'live' and not online. What I learnt was that I had too much information to impart for the two hour time slot! Better more information than not, but I will have to tweak the six-week class to fit a live platform.

Maria Popova wrote in a post:

I think a great deal about the difference between routine and ritual as a special case of our more general and generally trying quest for balance — ripped asunder by the contrary longings for control and whimsy, we routinize daily life in order to make its inherent chaos more manageable, then ritualize it in order to imbue its mundanity with magic, which by definition violates the predictable laws of the universe.

I like this definition. We teach about the importance of ritual in our creativity class. Rituals can help lead to habits that support your creative practice. Even creativity needs practice and ritual can set your intention and determination toward fulfilling your goal.

Art Markman wrote in a post:

To really develop a habit for creative practice, you need a regular ritual. For example, Stephen King (a prolific and creative writer) sits down each morning to write for a few hours. He compares the process of getting ready to write to the ritual of getting ready to go to sleep.

Rituals don't have to be elaborate. They can be as simple as my ritual of cleaning my working space before I begin a creative project.

Setting a daily ritual to practice creative ideas will help you make the time you need to be creative.

Moving our bodies is a great way to feed our creative spirit.

There is a wonderful article on Brainpickings that discuss wanderlust:

With the hindsight of a decade and a half, Solnit’s book emerges as triply timely today, as we struggle to master that ever more precarious balancing act of living with presence in the age of productivity. She writes:

Thinking is generally thought of as doing nothing in a production-oriented culture, and doing nothing is hard to do. It’s best done by disguising it as doing something, and the something closest to doing nothing is walking. Walking itself is the intentional act closest to the unwilled rhythms of the body, to breathing and the beating of the heart. It strikes a delicate balance between working and idling, being and doing. It is a bodily labor that produces nothing but thoughts, experiences, arrivals.

Mind Mapping is a great way to free up your imagination and see where it leads. Mind mapping is one of our assignments in Rituals Of Creativity™. You start with a central thought, problem, idea or project...then branch out from there. It's am amazing tool when you are stuck or just don't know how to take the next step. Roberta used this process to map out our Vibration Of Color™class.

Here is a terrific blog site that explains this process well:

This animated video by Matthew Winkler is a wonderful tutorial on the Hero's Journey. A journey we all take, no matter how small or large our goals. Many writers use these steps when creating their story line. I also feel that the stages of the Hero's Journey is also a creative process, with highs and lows along the way, and ending with transformation.

I want to share with you a blog post on color palettes of master artists.

Art Varsity is the website, and they have taken 35 famous paintings and listed the dominant colors used by the artists. This is a cool idea and a great way to find out what color combinations inspire you.

My favorite palettes were two paintings by Henri Matisse. What are yours?

Read an interesting article by Clive Thompson in Wired magazine. In a nutshell, I'm going to paraphrase it here.

If you're "dying of boredom" don't head for your phone, tablet or one of the myriad of mobile devices to play a game of Solitaire or Angry Birds! Boredom fuels your creative mind. We need to lean into these downtimes so we can delve into deeper thoughts.

This might be the reason why I think of my best ideas in the shower. Nothing to do but soap and wash.

A restless mind craves stimulation. When you're not satisfied you tend to seek out ways to engage your mind. What worries psychologists is we are eliminating these 'slow times' by grabbing our mobile device. This shuts down deeper thinking.

I love this: Call boredom useful and productive monotony.

But be aware there is a difference between useful boredom and lethargic boredom. Lethargic boredom is when you can't be bothered. When you feel worn out like a faded dishrag.

So embrace "fructifying boredom" and shut off those pesky devices at least for while.

Wow! We can't believe it's already Week 4 of our Vibration Of Color course. All of our students have done such an incredible journal work. If you'd missed taking this course, we will be offering it again this summer.

What's coming up? In May, we are offering Rituals Of Creativity. Rituals of Creativity investigates the creative process through an invitation to create. There will be videos to view, assignments to complete and share, and Creative Mining, a supplemental document to support further investigation into the subject matter. All assignments will use a visual journal format. We believe that the creative process is not a linear one. Therefore the modules overlap and you might find yourself going back to one or more past modules as you work on the current one.

A new class is in the making! Journey With Words...where we'll explore the importance of writing and the power of words. This class will available in the fall of 2015.

We hope you will stay in touch and join our 3 Creative Alchemists Facebook Group.

We always love to hear from you!

Vicki and Roberta

Roberta is visiting and we're putting the finishing touches on Vibration of Color™ which starts in February, and Rituals of Creativity™in March.

I took this picture in Japan at one of their wonderful shrines. The colors were so beautiful and added to the serene nature of the landscape.

Right now I have three paintings in different stages of development. All are experiments where I'm trying out new techniques and stretching my abilities. I've given myself permission to fail. Fail in the sense I'm not worried about the final product. Having fun is my prime objective. Being open and free of expectations allows the creative side of me to have fun as well.

The painting you see here is not close to being done. I've added real maple leaves to the canvas, and I will see how they hold up. I need more layers and added interest, such as lines, shapes and possibly words. This is a cross composition, but the cross shape is too equal in size. I will obscure some of the area and create different size shapes and add color.

Taking a picture of your work in progress is a great way to see what needs to be added or taken away. Also, hanging your work where you can see it every day is another way to get to know your painting. It's a great way to get a fresh perspective on your work of art.

I've been trying to get into the art studio for the longest time. Really there is no excuse, but after saying that, I've been writing more than painting, trying to finish up a first draft. I did try my hand at using Venetian Plaster on canvas. Roberta loves the stuff! I can't say how successful I was with it, but it did create nice texture. I did one layer of paint so this is a start...

Roberta and I spent five days in Santa Fe at the Artisan's Expo. We had fun taking a workshops. Sandra Duran Wilson's workshop focused on the importance of layering your work. This is a start to a piece I did on clayboard, a very smooth surface. I used acrylic paints, netting and cheesecloth for texture, and collaged the geometric shapes. A start to a possible painting...
