Maria Popova wrote in a post:

I think a great deal about the difference between routine and ritual as a special case of our more general and generally trying quest for balance — ripped asunder by the contrary longings for control and whimsy, we routinize daily life in order to make its inherent chaos more manageable, then ritualize it in order to imbue its mundanity with magic, which by definition violates the predictable laws of the universe.

I like this definition. We teach about the importance of ritual in our creativity class. Rituals can help lead to habits that support your creative practice. Even creativity needs practice and ritual can set your intention and determination toward fulfilling your goal.

Art Markman wrote in a post:

To really develop a habit for creative practice, you need a regular ritual. For example, Stephen King (a prolific and creative writer) sits down each morning to write for a few hours. He compares the process of getting ready to write to the ritual of getting ready to go to sleep.

Rituals don't have to be elaborate. They can be as simple as my ritual of cleaning my working space before I begin a creative project.

Setting a daily ritual to practice creative ideas will help you make the time you need to be creative.

This animated video by Matthew Winkler is a wonderful tutorial on the Hero's Journey. A journey we all take, no matter how small or large our goals. Many writers use these steps when creating their story line. I also feel that the stages of the Hero's Journey is also a creative process, with highs and lows along the way, and ending with transformation.

Read an interesting article by Clive Thompson in Wired magazine. In a nutshell, I'm going to paraphrase it here.

If you're "dying of boredom" don't head for your phone, tablet or one of the myriad of mobile devices to play a game of Solitaire or Angry Birds! Boredom fuels your creative mind. We need to lean into these downtimes so we can delve into deeper thoughts.

This might be the reason why I think of my best ideas in the shower. Nothing to do but soap and wash.

A restless mind craves stimulation. When you're not satisfied you tend to seek out ways to engage your mind. What worries psychologists is we are eliminating these 'slow times' by grabbing our mobile device. This shuts down deeper thinking.

I love this: Call boredom useful and productive monotony.

But be aware there is a difference between useful boredom and lethargic boredom. Lethargic boredom is when you can't be bothered. When you feel worn out like a faded dishrag.

So embrace "fructifying boredom" and shut off those pesky devices at least for while.

Roberta is visiting and we're putting the finishing touches on Vibration of Color™ which starts in February, and Rituals of Creativity™in March.

I took this picture in Japan at one of their wonderful shrines. The colors were so beautiful and added to the serene nature of the landscape.

Encoustic Art  'Writers Blocks"
I saw this piece of art in La Jolla and thought it was
a creative way to express the concept of creative
blocks.  My photography lacks but each block had
some of the same "fears" that all creative people
have from time to time.  The top were crumpled
up pages that came from frustration.

It shows how the creative process is at work.

In our Rituals of Creativity™ Course we learn
to break down those fears and turn them into
fun!

Welcome to 3 Creative Alchemists. Our classes are designed to encourage and inspire, and are a safe place where you can explore your creative side. Beauty and inspiration are fundamental to the creative process. Dr. Wayne W. Dyer put it wonderfully when he wrote: Being creative means trusting your own purpose and having an attitude of unbending intent in your daily thoughts and activities. Staying creative means giving form to your personal intentions.

Enter our world, explore are online classes and workshops. Watch our free videos on different art techniques for journaling. Tap into your creative nature. Just Have Fun! Roberta and Vicki

I'm sad to see the last week of class is coming to an end, but happy to announce we will be teaching the online course once again, October 20 - November 30.

Roberta and I had so much fun teaching this course over the summer. We had such wonderful creative students who participated and shared with others. All of us learned and were inspired. So much so that I continued in my journal and finished it!

Here's a couple of new pages:

I'm working on a series of mixed media paintings using fiber paste as the substrate. This is my first study - and the canvas size is small - 8" x 10". I'm gradually going bigger (next painting is 12" x 16"), keeping with the landscape composition and rough texture.

This painting is several layers of paint - (over nine). The black horizon line is Japanese paper I purchased in Tokyo. I'm trying to loosen up my process by layering the paints slowly...letting the paint dry before I apply the next layer. By going bigger, I am exploring new ways to approach my art. The different perspective gets me out of my comfort zone.

I'm excited to partake on this journey! Vicki

"My Atmosphere"

This is a painting that was bought a few years ago.  I am going to visit the woman who bought it to see where it is in her collection.

We are getting ready to work with gold leaf as a background to paint this week and it reminded me of this piece.  The beauty of expression is you never know where it will lead and who will respond..the important thing is to let it go and just express!  And JUST HAVE FUN

This really is a part of the creative process.  Often people do not try to create because they fear making mistakes.  But I have found and Vicki confirmed it is true for her also, that  some of our best ideas come from so called Mistakes.  And knowing which ones to keep to create art is not a talent…It is permission.
